Fifth grade is the perfect age for young readers to dive into the world of animal books. The middle grades are such formative years; filling them with wonderful stories of animals can greatly impact how they see the world as they grow up. In this post, we will look at a blend of heartwarming fiction and fascinating nonfiction animal stories. Through picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels, animal lovers everywhere will appreciate these books about animals.
When children are in the middle grades, between the ages of 9 and 12, they have the opportunity to start learning about more complex topics and deeper themes within stories. These books will support their development of empathy, science learning, and, of course, literacy skills.
These books are not only for fifth graders, middle schoolers will also love and appreciate these books too! As most middle schoolers are independent readers, they should be encouraged to share what they are learning to help solidify the new ideas.
Why Should 5th Graders Read Animal Books?
-Reading builds vocabulary and comprehension skills.
-Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them. These books can make the animal kingdom more accessible to them.
-Animal stories, whether fiction or nonfiction, are a great way to help young readers develop empathy, compassion, and critical thinking skills.
-Books about animals are perfect for cross-curricular learning (think science, reading, and writing!)
