Motherhood is beautiful. Waking up to those little faces every morning and giving it your all is incredibly rewarding. However, along with all the beauty and joy, there is also sacrifice. Moms give up their time, hobbies, and personal goals in order to care for their children and home.
Of course, making sacrifices for your family is not a bad thing—in fact, learning to put others first is crucial. But, constantly giving without refilling your own cup can leave you feeling exhausted. Moms who feel like they have lost themselves in motherhood often wonder, Who am I beyond “mom?”
If this sounds like you, don’t worry-this post is for you.
Creativity is a wonderful way to renew your passion. Taking time for yourself shouldn’t bring on mom guilt. It should remind you that while caring for your family is important, you are still your own person with passions worth nurturing.

Why does creativity matter for moms?
As moms, it’s easy to pour every last drop of ourselves into our children and homes, leaving little time for personal growth. Yet, making space for creativity can do more than just provide a break. It has been shown to enhance overall well-being, reduce stress, build confidence, foster a sense of accomplishment, and even improve brain health.
In fact, research suggests that creativity can even help you live longer (Rodriguez, 2012).
Even if you never considered yourself a creative person before having kids, it’s not too late to start. There’s a creative outlet for everyone.
Creativity is more than just a hobby—it’s a great way to express yourself, process emotions, and find balance in the beautiful yet demanding journey of motherhood.

Need some inspiration for ways to be creative? This list of creative outlets will get you started in the right direction.
Journaling and Creative Writing
Writing is a wonderful outlet to organize your thoughts and express your emotions in a healthy, meaningful way. It can also help you rediscover your voice. Whether you choose to journal about your daily experiences, start a blog, write poetry, or simply free write, putting words on paper can be incredibly therapeutic.
Not only does writing provide a place to process emotions, but it also boosts happiness, sharpens your thinking, helps you navigate challenges, increases gratitude, enhances learning, and promotes relaxation. (Sparring Mind).

Needle and Thread
There are many ways to be creative with a needle and thread. Sewing, embroidery, crocheting, and knitting are all great places to start. Adding your own personal touch to a handmade creation not only brings a sense of accomplishment but also allows you to express your unique personality. The best part? You’ll have something beautiful to enjoy when you’re finished.
While these are fun and rewarding hobbies, these crafts also offer incredible benefits. They improve hand-eye coordination, help combat cognitive decline, boost self-esteem, and relieve stress—making them a perfect creative outlet for moms (Taylor & Francis, 2024).
Gardening
Creating an indoor or outdoor garden offers a peaceful escape from the busyness of daily life. Working with your hands to plant and nurture a garden brings a deep sense of calm and satisfaction. Plus, there’s something truly rewarding about watching what you planted grow and thrive!
Beyond its beauty, gardening encourages physical activity, promotes a healthier diet (if you grow fruits and vegetables), and serves as a natural stress reliever (Wimmer, 2022).

Baking and Cooking as an Art
Forget about rushing to throw together a meal that no one wants to eat. Instead, turn cooking into an art form. Experiment with flavors, textures, and presentation. Try baking homemade bread or learning to decorate a cake. Rediscover the joy of being in the kitchen and embrace the creative process of expressing yourself through food. Your family will love being the official taste testers!
Cooking gives you great food and it relieves stress, enhances creativity, boosts mood, and builds self-confidence—making it fulfilling and rewarding (Northern Healthcare).
Painting and Drawing
Grab a paintbrush and some paper, and let the stress melt away. Creating something you love might take practice, but even the process itself is beneficial. Expressing yourself through art is a fantastic creative outlet, even for the busiest moms. And if you need to step away, you can always pick up right where you left off.
In addition to being a fun and relaxing hobby, painting and drawing offer amazing benefits. They activate the brain’s reward center, promote optimism, reduce stress, and improve concentration—making them a perfect way to unwind and recharge. (Gharib, 2020).
Photography
Capturing the beauty in everyday moments through photography helps you appreciate even the smallest parts of your day. You will see beauty in everything once you start looking for it through the lens of a camera. Whether it’s snapping pictures of nature, your children, or creative compositions, photography is a meaningful way to express yourself.
It also encourages mindfulness, self-expression, and shifting your perspective, while supporting personal growth and well-being (Dawson, 2023).

Handmade Crafts
From candle making to scrapbooking, there are countless handmade crafts to spark your creativity. If you’re looking for ideas, think back to what you enjoyed doing as a kid—many childhood crafts have adult versions you can dive right into! Or, try something completely new like soap making, macrame, card making, pressed flower art, beaded jewelry, or DIY furniture makeovers.
Crafting enhances fine and gross motor skills, acts as a natural antidepressant, boosts self-confidence, and helps reduce stress overall (Norris).

Making Time for Creativity
Finding time to be creative as a mom can be tough, but starting with just 10-15 minutes a day can make a difference. If you need to include your kids, find a kid-friendly version to do together. Sometimes those 10 minutes can be found in the early hours of the morning, late at night, or at nap time. Many of the creative outlets I listed above can be put down and picked up again easily, making them easy to start and stop as needed.
Remember, creativity isn’t about perfection. If we get caught up in making something perfect, it can add stress instead of relieving it.
Just have fun with it. Try something new!

Rediscover Yourself Through Creativity
Motherhood is a beautiful part of who you are, but it is not all you are. By nurturing your creative side, you give yourself the space to grow, recharge, and reconnect with other parts of your identity beyond being a mom. So, go ahead—pick up that paintbrush, thread, or camera, and rediscover the passions that make you, you.”

What a great article! I’m a huge advocate for moms taking time to themselves after having had four back to back pregnancies. I definitely felt lost beyond being just mom! My creative outlet has been starting a business. Not the easiest feat, but it helps me get that me time I craved!

Great ideas. I regain peace in the garden, too!
It can be a challenge in winter months. I enjoy projects that I can see progress, so organizing or making candles or soap are some of my favorites!

Love these! Thank you for sharing! I started embroidery last year when my son was one and it is absolutely one of the best things I have done! It’s easy to pick up and put down at a moments notice (perfect for all the little interruptions).

This post is so insightful and I love your examples. I used to paint and draw but now as a mom use cooking a sourdough as my creative outlet. I 100% felt like I had “lost” myself until I started baking sourdough. Instead of mourning what I am not able to do in my current season, I love that baking fits easily into my day and my little one can help. Thanks for sharing all of this!
Haley
I love this!! I think motherhood gets so much negative publicity, but it can be such a beautiful growing season, and these ideas really help with that focus! Thanks for sharing.
Trina
So important! And I love that some of these ideas also benefit the family and home, such as gardening or photography.

Lots of great ideas here. As a mom of adults who has spent the last 25 years living every day as “Momma,” I’m finding it difficult to know what to do with myself. I married and became a mother very young so I have never had a time to get to know adult Me. I may need to incorporate some of these activities in my life now.
