Being a mom comes with a whole range of experiences. These books about motherhood describe what we’re going through while we raise our babies. The sweet experience that is motherhood is captured right here in these stories.

With each passing day, I become more aware of just how fleeting these moments with my babies are. It feels like just yesterday I was finding out I was pregnant for the first time, and now that little mustard seed is running, jumping, talking, and climbing. The older my kids get, the more I appreciate stories like these. These books about motherhood describe exactly how I’m feeling watching my kids grow up.

I enjoy reading stories like these with my kids because they give me a chance to remind them of just how important they are to me and how much I love them.

Your Shadow and Mine by Kathleen Harding

Your Shadow and Mine book cover

This sweet story tells of a mother watching her shadow change throughout her lifetime as a mother. She begins with her shadow all alone, then watches as it changes with her pregnancy and introducing her baby. The book ends with her looking at her shadow standing next to her grown child as it becomes one shadow once again. *Cue the tears*

This is a perfect gift for someone who struggled with infertility before becoming pregnant. The story describes the parents waiting for years for a baby. Even during all the waiting, they never gave up hope and they held onto the name they had picked out for their future baby.

First Night by Sasha Saidman

First Night book cover

This author truly paints in words the lovely and life changing journey of becoming a mother. Feel the excitement when those two little lines appear on the pregnancy test. A mother’s love for her baby begins long before he is even born. The bond between a mother and her child is unbreakable. Even as children grow up, a mother always cherishes the memories of those early days of motherhood. No matter how big her baby gets, she will always love him.

This story makes me cry every time I read it, as I remember my own experience of becoming a mother. This is a perfect baby shower gift for that mom-to-be in your life.

When I Hold You by Ashley Huffstutler

When I hold you book cover

This lovely story draws a comparison between the love a mother has for her baby and the love God has for all of us. The mother in the story is constantly reminded of God in each of her interactions with her baby. The gentleness and grace that God handles us with comes through in the mother and her interactions with her child too.

This story does a great job describing the sweet innocence of our interactions with our babies. Bringing about a sense of peace in the reader.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

the giving tree book cover

This classic is a parable about the gift of giving of oneself for the ones you love. What better describes a mother’s sacrifice and love for her children than that? Read the story of a tree who keeps on giving to the person it loves the most, even when it’s not appreciated. Until one day, there is nothing left and the person finally realizes what a gift the tree has been their whole life.

This story is a great comparison of a mother’s love for her children. The older I get, the more of an impact this story has on me. If you haven’t read this one yet, it’s worth the effort to get a copy of the book.

Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney

Guess How much I love you book cover

How much does Little Nutbrown Hare love Big Nutbrown Hare? Find out in this adorable book about how a parent’s love for their child is never ending. Little Nutbrown Hare is constantly trying to express his love for Big Nutbrown Hare by comparing it to different things he sees. Big Nutbrown Hare hears how much he loves him and always comes up with something even bigger to describe his love for his child.

I love this book because it sums up how a parent feels about their child so well. The child loves the parent so much, and the parent loves them back in ways they could never imagine.

This story captures the profound bond between parent and child—a connection that feels like your heart living outside your body. It reflects the shared pain of heartbreak, the joy in their successes, and the ever-present attachment that transcends distance and time.

This story is short and sweet and perfectly describes the attachment a parent has to their child.

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

The Kissing Hand book cover

There comes a time in every child’s life when they must be away from their parents—whether it’s school, church, or visiting friends and family. In this story, a young raccoon is nervous about going to school and being separated from his mother. To comfort him, she shares a special family secret: the kissing hand. This simple yet profound gesture reminds the little raccoon of his mother’s love, offering reassurance and comfort even when they’re apart.

This story is perfect to read with your children when they have to be away from you. Many kindergarten teachers use it on the first day of school to help the young children feel better about coming to school.

It explores all the wonderful possibilities of what a child can become, delivering an uplifting and encouraging message. The story ends with the parent’s heartfelt promise that no matter what their child chooses to be, they will always be loved.

I like this book because it gives children the freedom to follow their dreams, while still knowing that their mom will be there loving them no matter what. It gives them the freedom to fail without the fear of losing their mother’s love.
