Handprint Valentine’s Day Craft for Babies

Completed handprint and footprint valentine's day craft for babies

Create an adorable valentine’s day craft using your baby’s footprints and handprints.

Valentine’s day is a time to celebrate love and those who mean the most to you. This valentine’s day craft is perfect for just that. Use those tiny footprints to create a decoration or homemade gift this valentine’s day.

This year is my youngest’s first valentine’s day. He is 8 months old and I’m already wishing he would stay small forever! This valentine’s day craft allows me to preserve those tiny handprints and footprints so I can always remember him just like this.

I love the process of doing a craft with my baby. Each step that I would normally think nothing of, he is fascinated by. From feeling the paint squish between his toes, to watching the handprint appear on the paper after he presses his chubby little hand on to it, he is mesmerized. The sensory experience of this craft is wonderful for babies.

Directions

1. Print the free valentine’s day craft template. It is best if you print it on cardstock, but you could make regular printer paper work too.

2. Paint your baby’s hand or foot. Make sure to get paint all over it, covering every part so you get a great print.

3. Firmly, but gently, press your baby’s hand or foot onto the paper inside the heart. Think about the angle you are using so you have space for the other one too.

4. Lift the hand or foot straight up and off of the paper so it doesn’t smear.

5. Allow to dry. Then, repeat steps 2-4 with the other hand or foot.

6. Once you have both handprints/footprints on the paper, let it dry.

7. Finally, cut out the 8×10 by cutting along the dotted lines. Now, it’s time to put it on display or give it to someone you love!

Tips

-Use tempera paint because it is washable and safe for kids. Whenever my kids get it on their clothes, I just throw it in the wash and it comes right out. It also washes off of their skin easily too.

-Print multiple copies, you’ll probably need to do more than one before you get it just right.

-I put my baby in his high chair so he couldn’t move around as much, this helped a lot!

This is such a cute craft. My sister had her first baby last March, so I sent this over to her to do with him before Valentine’s Day! Thank you for the idea!
